I’ve already written a great deal about Johnny. The commentators during Johnny’s short program at Cup of Russia make a big deal about his love for Russia. I think it’s cool; he loves performing in Russia, and as Terry Gannon said, Johnny may be more popular in Russia than here. Part of that, I’m sure, is that figure skating is more popular in general than in the U.S. His sensibilities are certainly very Russian, and his influences are not only Russian skaters, but Russian dancers and musicians. I didn’t know that he speaks Russian, as this YouTube video shows. I don’t know Russian, but it sounds somewhat fluent, with the occasional English word thrown in like all new language learners tend to do. That impresses me; Johnny is so into Russia, he’s taken the time and effort to learn their language. Like I said, that’s cool.
