Johnny Weir Short Program

According to the commentators, this is the debut of Weir's short program. I liked it; it was a better debut than of Evan Lysacek's short program at Cup of America.

Weir is supposed to do a quad toe attempt, but he was ill and it's early in the season. What cracks me up is at the point when he was supposed to do the quad, Peggy Fleming says, "This is where he does have planned a quad toe, but only a triple toe, triple toe," as if "only" doing a triple jump was a disappointment. The commentators do that a lot; for me, the fact that any skater can pull off a triple jump, and do it well like Weir usually does, is astounding.

Dick Button continues to fawn over Johnny Weir. He was shameless in his admiration of Weir during the Olympics. Okay, Dick—we know you like that guy. Anyway, Dick reports that Weir is trying “a new look” this year. He’s attempting to look more masculine in his skating style and costume. Translation: he’s trying to look less “gay.” To quote “Seinfeld,” not that there’s anything wrong with that!
