Daisuke Takahashi

Peggy did it again! “Just a triple” instead of a quad.

Takahashi didn’t do as well, so the American men won this discipline. During this program, there was an interesting discussion among the commentators about the layback spin and why women do it more than men. Dick says that it’s harder, that it’s “hard to arch your back and raise your leg at the same time. Ladies are more supple.” Peggy, however, insists that men could probably pull it off if they stretched more. She also said that the layback spin is a “pretty move” and doesn’t fit in the style of men’s skating.

The commentators also commented on the role of music in figure skating, and the importance of fitting the program with the power of the music. They also pointed out another negative part of the new scoring system—that it takes away from aesthetic moves, especially in the footwork.
