Kawaguchi and Smirnov

This is “the team from Russia to watch,” or so said Terry Gannon. However, Kawaguchi, being Japanese, has to give up her citizenship to do things like compete in the Olympics. The report is that she unwilling to do that. I don’t understand that. Why would an athlete move to another country, gain a partner there, represent that country in international events like the Grand Prix, but not be willing to change her citizenship to her new country? She certainly isn’t going to go as far as she can unless she does. I understand that it’s difficult to change your citizenship, especially if you really love your home country, but why go through all that? Why put your partner through it? Why would the partner be willing to be held back like that?

Kawaguchi and Smirnov is a new pairs team; they’ve only been together for six months, and Cup of Russia was their first international competition. If they’re that good already, imagine their potential. Perhaps she just needs the time to make the decision. At any rate, they’re impressive, and their costumes are cool.
