Dubreuil and Lauzon Long Program

Michelle Wojdyla from the U.S.F.S.A. said in her blog of Campbell’s Cup that she thought this program was better than Dubrueil and Lauzon's “Somewhere in Time” long program from last year. When I read that, I found it hard to believe, since I loved it and thought it was one of the most beautiful Dance routines I’ve ever seen. I’ve complained about Dance’s propensity to be “thematic” in this blog, but I believe that their “Somewhere in Time” routine does a good job at presenting a story and a theme. (Or maybe I liked it so much because I’m sentimental over the movie with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour.) It told the story well, and the music is beautiful.

Of course, “Somewhere in Time” was the program they should’ve performed at the Olympics, if it weren’t for their horrible fall during their short program. What a heartbreak, especially since it probably would’ve gotten a lot of attention because it handled themes so adeptly. Dick Button said during his commentary that their fall was so horrible because Dubreuil fell straight down on the ice, “like falling on concrete.” I’ll take Dick’s word for it when he insists that falls in figure skating don’t tend to be so bad because when skaters fall, they slide. (That makes sense, but all falls look bad to this non-skater.)
